Welcome to La Florida´s people! The Prosopography of Colonial Florida, 1513-1821: Building Biographies on an American Frontier.
Juan Ponce de León's 1513 arrival in Florida initiated a long process of attempted colonial rule over the American southeast. Over the next three centuries, the entangled histories of would-be conquistadors, soldiers, settlers, shipwreck survivors, slaves, and Native Americans created a unique historical landscape, one that connected Florida to a much broader global tale. But who were Florida's colonial-era inhabitants and what are their stories?
The "people" component of the La Florida site is built upon a dynamic and interconnected platform that houses biographical data about the men and women who shaped Florida's colonial past. The searchable database allows users to conduct custom searches. Soon, users will be able to create stunning infographics and compare populations over time. At present, the database includes biographical information about more than 3500 individuals. Ongoing projects will soon increase that number to well over 10,000 people.
We invite you to learn more about the forgotten figures who called La Florida home.
